Youth Dialogue on Transport Challenges at City Convent School

As part of our ongoing efforts to address urban mobility challenges, The Climate Agenda hosted a youth dialogue at City Convent School, Rajajipuram, Lucknow. The session aimed to identify and address the key transport-related problems faced by local students and young people. It provided a space for students to express their experiences and share their concerns about the challenges they encounter during their daily commutes.

During the session, the students highlighted several key challenges they face regarding transport, such as:

1.Unreliable Public Transport: Many students mentioned the challenges of dealing with unreliable, infrequent, and overcrowded public transport.

2.Safety Concerns: Students discussed safety issues, particularly in poorly lit areas or during late hours, which deterred them from using public transport.

3.Cost of Transport: Students from lower-income backgrounds raised concerns  about the high cost of transport, which adds a financial burden on their families.

4.Access and Inclusivity: Some students pointed out that there is a lack of accessible transport options for youth with disabilities.

Youth as Change Agents

The dialogue wasn’t just about identifying problems; it was also about coming up with solutions. Some of the ideas suggested by the students included:

Improved Scheduling and Timeliness: Students suggested that public transport should run on a more predictable and timely schedule, especially during peak hours.

Safe Transport Solutions: Introducing more safety measures, such as better lighting at bus stops and more secure transport options for students, especially after dark.

Affordable Fares: Offering discounted fares for students and low-income families to ensure that public transport is accessible for everyone.

Awareness Campaigns: Educating the community about sustainable and eco-friendly transport options like walking, cycling, and public transport.

The Road Ahead

The youth dialogue was an important step towards building a more inclusive, sustainable, and youth-friendly urban transport system. By listening to the concerns of the students, we have gathered valuable input that will help shape a better transport system for the future.
