Rethinking Urban Transport Through Community Dialogue in Gaya ji

Bringing Stakeholders Together to Address Vehicular Emissions and Public Health

Across Gaya ji, urban mobility is marked by growing congestion, poor infrastructure and limited public transport. Over time, these challenges have routine commutes into experiences marked by delays and uncertainty.

On 20 January 2026, over 30 participants including JDU leader Chandan Yadav, psychologist Dr. Sadiya, city councillor, and youth leaders came together for a town hall – city-level discussion on urban mobility, organized under our Harit Safar initiative.

In collaboration with our SUMC partner Blessings, the dialogue offered a reflective space for participants to share experiences and identify solutions. The conversation invited a range of voices. Participants described how traffic congestion, aging infrastructure, and urban encroachment are compounding everyday difficulties.

As the discussion deepened, the focus turned to the pace of change.  The medical experts present highlighted the rising burden of respiratory and pollution related diseases and stressed the urgent need to address transport related emissions as a public health priority.

Delays in the rollout of 50 electric buses were highlighted as a pressing issue, as they continue to hinder the transition towards cleaner mobility.

As part of the way forward, engagement with city authorities will continue along with a planned meeting with the City Transport Commissioner to highlight such issues and encourage concrete action. The session sparked a deeper sense of responsibility and a commitment to drive real change.

Because every meaningful shift starts when dialogues turn into sustained collective action.
