Cleaner Air, Smarter Transport: Lucknow Unveils Roadmap for Sustainable Mobility
Lucknow, September 6, 2025. With Uttar Pradesh home to the highest vehicle population in India and struggling with severe air quality challenges, The Climate Agenda, in collaboration with IIT-BHU and Envirocatalysts, launched two landmark studies: “From Gridlock to Green Inclusive Mobility – Analysing Traffic, Air Quality and Public Transport Opportunities in Lucknow” and “Assessment of Uttar Pradesh Electric Vehicle Manufacturing and Mobility Policy 2022.”
The findings reveal the scale of the problem:
1. Lucknow residents may lose 6.5 years of life expectancy due to air pollution compared to WHO safety standards.
2. Reliance on private vehicles dominates, with 51% two-wheelers and 29% cars, worsening congestion and emissions.
3. Peak congestion occurs daily between 5 PM and 8 PM, with traffic speeds dropping to their lowest.
Ekta Shekhar, Director of The Climate Agenda, emphasized that both reports call for a comprehensive strategy to make mobility people-centric, inclusive, and climate-resilient. The EV policy assessment highlights 37 forward-looking opportunities to strengthen Uttar Pradesh’s framework, focusing on financial access, equity, infrastructure, and green industrial growth.
Experts stressed that addressing Lucknow’s transport challenges requires urgent action:
Smart traffic management and stronger bus corridors.
Building public transport alternatives to reduce reliance on private vehicles.
Policy refinements to make Uttar Pradesh a national leader in electric mobility.
“These recommendations reflect lived experiences and real commuter voices,” said Sunil Dahiya, Envirocatalysts, while Dr. Abhisek Mudgal, IIT-BHU, added that with government support, Lucknow can become a model for clean air and sustainable growth.
The reports, jointly published under the Harit Safar Campaign and Sustainable Urban Mobility Collective (SUMC), aim to inspire actionable change in policy and practice.
We extend our sincere gratitude to the national and regional media for their extraordinary coverage across print and electronic platforms, amplifying the importance of Lucknow’s green mobility future.
