Charter of Demands at Mawaiya Parshad Office
The Climate Agenda organized a pivotal community meeting at the Mawaiya Parshad Office under the Harit Safar initiative. The meeting’s core aim was to present a Charter of Demands addressing critical issues like water, hygiene, healthcare, and street lighting in underserved communities. Through this gathering, we sought to empower residents to assert their rights and call for the provision of essential services.
What We Set Out to Do
The objective of this meeting was clear: to present the Charter of Demands before the Mawaiya Parshad and address key concerns raised by the community. For months, the women of SangGati Kendra had been identifying gaps in local services. Together, we drafted a list of essential services that needed immediate attention, including the provision of safe drinking water, proper sanitation, functioning healthcare facilities, and adequate lighting. The meeting aimed not only to highlight these issues but also to mobilize the community to advocate for their right to these basic facilities.
The meeting brought together 25 women and girls from Mawaiya, including domestic workers, students, and housewives. These women have been deeply affected by the lack of basic services, and their voices were vital in shaping the demands presented to local authorities. Their active participation marked a significant step towards collective community action.
What We Discussed
The event was an interactive session where we heard from the participants about their daily struggles. From unsafe travel conditions to the absence of essential amenities, the women shared their frustrations and discussed solutions. We focused on listening to their concerns and understanding how local authorities could better serve their needs.
Highlights from the Discussion
- Lack of Basic Infrastructure: Many women highlighted the absence of clean water, proper sanitation, and street lights. These issues have a direct impact on their health, safety, and overall quality of life.
- Inadequate Healthcare Services: Several women shared their experiences of long waiting times and the lack of basic healthcare services in government hospitals. The need for better medical facilities was a major topic of discussion.
- Safety Concerns: The lack of street lights and poorly maintained roads made traveling after dark unsafe for women. Concerns about harassment and accidents were frequently raised.
- Waste Management Issues: Community members pointed out the inadequate waste disposal systems and lack of dustbins, making their surroundings unhygienic and contributing to the overall pollution.
Why It Matters
The Charter of Demands is more than just a list of needs—it’s a collective plea for justice and basic rights. Presenting the demands before the Mawaiya Parshad was a crucial step toward raising awareness of the dire situation faced by residents. By discussing the lack of essential services, the community was able to connect with the larger issue of social inequity and environmental degradation. The Parshad’s response emphasized the need for further formal applications at the block level, but it also opened the door for future dialogue and actions.
Join Us in Empowering Communities for Change
At The Climate Agenda, we believe that true empowerment comes from taking action. The Charter of Demands is a call to action for the Mawaiya community to stand up for their rights and demand better living conditions. This meeting is just the beginning—together, we can continue to work towards creating a more inclusive, sustainable future for all.
