Cleaner Air, Faster Commutes: Patna’s Green Mobility Reports Show the Way Forward

Patna, August 28, 2025,  The Climate Agenda, in collaboration with Envirocatalysts and IIT-BHU, unveiled two groundbreaking studies in Patna: “From Gridlock to Green Inclusive Mobility” and “Assessment of Bihar EV Policy, 2023.” The launch event, graced by Hon’able Mayor Smt. Sita Sahu, marked a pivotal moment in Bihar’s journey towards sustainable urban mobility.

The findings paint a clear picture:

Patna requires 1,250+ new buses to meet commuter needs, with a strong push for 100% electric procurement.

Petrol use has surged 177%, worsening both congestion and air quality.

EV adoption in Bihar is struggling due to power outages, insufficient charging infrastructure, and subsidy gaps.

Mayor Hon’ble Sita Sahu emphasized the government’s readiness to take “tough issues head-on” and highlighted the importance of inclusive, people-first solutions. Experts echoed this, stressing that clean mobility means healthier citizens, safer streets, and a stronger economy.

Key recommendations from the reports include:

Expanding and electrifying Patna’s public transport system.

Building pedestrian-friendly streets and cycling lanes.

Designing transport with universal access and gender inclusivity.

Introducing congestion pricing and diesel cess to sustainably fund EV and NMT infrastructure.

“This is about people and a shared future,” said Ekta Shekhar, Director, The Climate Agenda. “With decisive actions, Patna can lead India’s transition to inclusive, low-carbon transport.”

The reports, jointly published under the Harit Safar Campaign and Sustainable Urban Mobility Collective (SUMC), provide actionable insights for policymakers, civil society, and citizens alike.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to national and regional media houses for their extraordinary coverage across print and electronic platforms, amplifying this critical conversation on Patna’s clean and inclusive mobility future.
