City Level Campaign
An initiative towards promoting the use of non-motorised vehicles under road safety and environmental protection
Harit Safar organized a five-day activity in Patna titled “Safar Saaf, Shehar Saaf”, aimed at promoting non-motorized transport and raising awareness about road safety and environmental sustainability. The campaign took place at five major intersections in the city, with active participation from NCC Udaan cadets, local youth, and volunteers from The Climate Agenda, all working together to encourage cleaner and greener transportation options.
The campaign highlighted several important activities aimed at promoting sustainable urban transport. First, it celebrated cyclists, rickshaw pullers, and pedestrians as “Harit Safar Mitra” (Green Travel Friends) to acknowledge their contribution to reducing pollution. Volunteers distributed stickers saying “Main Bhi Harit Safar Mitra” to non-motorized transport (NMT) users, motivating them to continue choosing eco-friendly modes of travel like cycling and walking, inspiring others to follow suit for a cleaner city. Additionally, real-time Air Quality Index (AQI) measurements were taken at major intersections using Airveda tools. Volunteers informed the public about the harmful effects of air pollution, particularly PM 2.5 and PM 10, and emphasized the need to reduce vehicular emissions. This served as a reminder for citizens to choose bicycles and other non-polluting options.
In conjunction with air quality monitoring, the campaign also focused on noise pollution. Sound levels were measured at traffic-heavy points, and the results were shared with passersby. Volunteers educated the public on the negative impacts of noise pollution, such as stress and hearing loss, while encouraging quieter, non-motorized transport options and minimizing unnecessary honking. Public participation was a key element of the campaign, as a signature drive was conducted to garner support for the development of dedicated cycle lanes, safe pedestrian pathways, and carbon-free public transport. Citizens from various walks of life contributed to this cause, underscoring the need for improved road safety and sustainable mobility solutions.
The five-day campaign culminated in a large awareness rally, with NCC cadets and volunteers marching through the streets, carrying banners and chanting slogans to promote non-motorized transport. The rally drew significant attention and helped reinforce the message of reducing pollution and creating safer spaces for pedestrians and cyclists. Through these activities, the “Safar Saaf, Shehar Saaf” campaign under the Harit Safar
